What have you heard about Blogging, MySpace, Facebook, etc. that may pose problems when using these tools in your classes? What can you do to avoid these problems in your classes?

Well, first thing, we had an "incident" last year where some students posted videos that were taken inside the school. The videos weren't horribly inapporpriate but they were in poor taste and did not represent the students or the school in a positive way.
So the issue is students have little or no awareness that anyone can see what they are posting, and their reputations will be affected.
What if...kids start to use obscene language, or worse still, begin to make unsafe connections with other bloggers?...
Blogging, like all other issues of internet use, has to be closely monitored. It is critical to provide a forum that is both up-to-date and engaging for students.
The danger may be that students reveal compromising information about themselves or others that will be seen by people who will put them at risk. Teachers can have lessons about how to use these tools/sites responsibly.
What happens if I post again?
I use blogs a fair amount in my classes; I love them! I think they are a great forum for helping students to think about real world writing applications (making them aware of audience).
Students post rumors about other students which can lead to fights at school and worse.
trouble posting. I worry I'd spend too much time troubleshooting instead of teaching.
Safety is an issue too
I think these kids will love this blogging idea. Like you did when you were MY history teacher. Way back in the year...er... 2003 to 2004? Anyways, hope your kids have fun Mr. L!
